Southern California State Science Olympiad
The Southern California State Science Olympiad is sponsored by the Southern California Association of Science Specialists (SCAS2).
What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.
February 8, 2014: Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge 2014
For the sixth year, Science Olympiad’s partner, Discovery Education, would like to invite your Division B teams to
submit science-related videos in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge (YSC)! The top award is $25,000,
plus trips (to Costa Rica!) and other cool benefits, like a special prize pack for any Science Olympiad finalists. In
past years, Science Olympiad has qualified more than 33 semifinalists and 15 finalists in the YSC (who each won $1,000,
trips and prizes). Last year’s overall winner, Peyton Robertson from Florida, was a Science Olympiad alumnus!
September 15, 2013: Upcoming Invitational Tournaments
We have a number of teams interested in hosting invitational tournaments this year. Invitational Tournaments allow
Science Olympiad teams to participate in non-official practice tournaments that do not impact Regional or State advancement
or rankings. Any middle, high school, and/or Science Olympiad organizations may host these tournaments to give teams a chance
to get a feel for various events, but these tournaments must be approved by their State Director in order to make it an official
Science Olympiad sanctioned event. While none of following teams have submitted the required form yet and thus not official yet,
we would like to post this information out so that teams can plan ahead in the case that they’re interested in participating in
any of these Invitational Tournaments.
Updated 2014 Schedule
We are proud to announce that we will be increasing the number of teams advancing to the State Tournament from
26 teams in the past to 30 teams this year in each division. Because of such, the schedule has been changed from an even/odd
structure to a triplet structure. Click here to check out the schedule.
California Science Olympiad Summer Institute
We had our first ever Science Olympiad Summer Institute in California on Saturday, July 13, 2013. This was a smaller,
one day version of the Science Olympiad Summer Institute hosted in Phoenix, Arizona each summer. We had 63 attendees
from various parts of California and 9 presenters. Thank you to everyone who attendeed!
The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games.
These challenging and motivational events are balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. They require knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. In addition, during the day there are open house activities that consist of science and mathematics demonstrations, activities and career counseling sessions conducted by professors and scientists at the host institution.
